Data from the National Institute of Statistics show that the service sector employs 44% of the working population in Rwanda. In April 2024, the Rwanda Convention Bureau (RCB) announced that business tourism had generated $95 million in 2023, an increase of 48% on the previous year. In addition, 10% of tourism revenues are redistributed to local communities, financing infrastructure projects such as roads, hospitals and schools. Over 1,000 projects have been supported, representing more than $8 million (12 billion Rwandan francs) distributed to local residents. In 2023, Rwanda welcomed over 1.4 million visitors, a number set to double by 2029, supported by the expansion of destinations served by RwandAir.
New opportunities for African youth
This Monday, December 16, 2024, the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) signed a memorandum of understanding with BILT LLC, the company of American animator and comedian Steve Harvey, aimed at promoting tourism and investment in Rwanda. The agreement focuses on several key areas, including skills development in film, media and education, as well as the promotion of health and wellness campaigns. During his visit, Steve Harvey emphasized the importance of creating opportunities for Africa’s youth, with a focus on skills development and entrepreneurship. Harvey said,
We need to create opportunities for the massive population of young people on the continent and develop the skills that will enable them to become entrepreneurs. That’s what I’m here to explore.
Future prospects for Rwanda’s tourism sector
The involvement of influential figures like Steve Harvey could play a crucial role in realizing Rwanda’s tourism and investment ambitions. His fame and international network offer a platform for increased visibility for the country, likely to attract new investors and visitors. However, the success of this partnership will depend on the effective implementation of the projects and their harmonious integration into the local socio-economic fabric.
The partnership between Rwanda and BILT LLC represents a promising opportunity for the development of the Rwandan tourism sector. If the initiatives announced come to fruition, they could help to diversify the tourism offering, strengthen local skills and attract more foreign investment, thereby consolidating Rwanda’s position on the international tourism scene.
